I started with a king size, platform bed that I made many years ago - (about 1980?). It was made from 2x8, clear pine; that's the dark wood in the first 2 pictures. I bought a kit for the heavy duty, spring lift mechanisms. The vertical case is made from 3/4 inch oak plywood. The mattress is 5 inch foam. The bottom of the bed - the front when it's up, is a flannel cloth over 1 inch foam insulation, and is used as a design wall for sewing and quilting projects.
